Additional Notes: The United States 8th Army Air Force, often called the “Mighty Eighth”, was one of the most powerful and influential air forces during WW2. Activated in January of 1942 with primary theater was the European Theater of Operations. Their primary mission was strategic bombing of WW2 Germany and air superiority over Europe. The aircraft used included the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, P-47 Thunderbolt, and P-51 Mustang. Conducted daylight precision bombing of industrial and military targets in Germany, France, and the Low Countries. Played a key role in the Combined Bomber Offensive, working alongside the RAF’s nighttime bombing campaigns.
Additional Notes: The US 5th Air Force Bullion Patch, Japanese-made during the occupation period, is a fascinating piece of military history. These patches were often hand-embroidered with silver bullion wire on dark blue wool, showcasing intricate craftsmanship. They were produced during the occupation and Korean War period, reflecting the unique blend of American military insignia and Japanese embroidery techniques.
