Additional Notes: The West Wall Medal, also known as the Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen, was a military medal of WW2 Germany. It was instituted in August of 1939, to recognize those who designed and built the fortifications on Germany’s western borders, known as the West Wall or Siegfried Line. The medal was awarded to the troops who served there prior to May 1940 and was re-instituted in 1944 to recognize those who renovated and strengthened the fortifications during the allied invasion. In total, 622,064 medals were awarded until January of 1941, and over 800,000 men were recognized by the end of the war. The medal is struck either in bronze-tombak or a bronzed zinc and features a wreath, a national eagle, a crossed sword and shovel, and the inscription “Fur Arbeit zum Schutze Deutschlands” (For Work in the Protection/Defense of Germany) on the reverse.
