Additional Notes: The WW2 German Luftwaffe Gravity Knife Type 1, officially known as the Flieger-Kappmesser, was introduced in 1937 and primarily issued to Luftwaffe aircrew and paratroopers (Fallschirmjäger). The knife has a gravity-operated blade, the knife opens by flipping a lever and letting gravity slide the blade out, no spring or manual pulling required. The wooden grips of type 1 knives featured smooth wood, typically beech or walnut. It has a non-takedown design, unlike later models, the type 1 knives could not be disassembled for maintenance. The marlin spike was a fold-out spike used for untangling parachute cords or knots. The blade was often marked “Rostfrei,” indicating stainless steel, and manufactured usually in Solingen, Germany, known as the “City of Blades.”
