United States WW2 5th Army Air Force (AAF) Service Tunic. The service tunic has enlisted collar insignia, one “U.S.” insignia and one AAF (Army Air Force) enlisted insignia. Also, has two different distinctive insignia below. One sleeve on the service tunic has a very nice and rare “quilted” bullion 5th AAF shoulder sleeve insignia (patch) and two overseas stripes on lower portion of the sleeve. Each stripe represents 6 months service in a combat zone. The 2 stripes would represent 1 year of service in a combat zone. Also, has a single service stripe (which represents 3 years of enlisted service). Service tunic also has Staff Sergeant (S/Sgt.) rank insignia on each sleeve. Above one front pocket is a air crew wing and 6 ribbon bars. Above the other front pocket is a ruptured duck honorable discharge insignia. Also, has several military laundry marks on inner upper back/neck area. Grouping also comes with a set of id tags on chain (chain is broken) and several pieces of documents, pictures, and distinctive insignia. Worn condition with a lot of scattered moth damage.
Additional Notes: The United States (U.S.) Army basic service uniforms consisted of a winter service uniform of olive drab (OD) wool worn in temperate weather, and a summer service uniform of khaki (a shade of tan) cotton fabric worn in tropical weather. In addition to the basic service uniforms, there were also a variety of fatigue and combat uniforms utilized as well. During ww2 era, summer and winter service uniforms were worn during their respective seasons while on duty within the United States. During wartime deployment, the European Theater of Operations was considered a year-round temperate zone and the Pacific Theater of Operations a year-round tropical uniform zone. In the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, U.S. soldiers wore both seasonal uniforms.
The US 5th AAF (Army Air Force) was a unit of the US Army Air Forces that operated in the Pacific Theater of WW2. It was established in Australia in September of 1942, under the command of Major General George Kenney.
