Additional Notes: The Silver Star Medal is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. It ranks just below the Medal of Honor and the Service Crosses (Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross) in terms of precedence among military awards. The medal was established by an Act of Congress in July of 1918, originally as the Citation Star, and was officially converted to the Silver Star Medal in 1932. During WW2, the Silver Star was primarily awarded for acts of valor in combat. The first Silver Stars of the war were awarded to members of the Army and Army Air Force for their actions during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. Notably, the first Marines to receive the Silver Star were awarded by General Douglas MacArthur for their bravery in the Philippines shortly thereafter. The medal was initially exclusive to the Army, but its authorization was expanded to include the Navy and Marine Corps in August of 1942, allowing for retroactive awards for actions dating back to the beginning of the war. This expansion meant that nearly 100,000 Silver Stars were awarded during WW2, reflecting the significant acts of heroism displayed by service members across all branches of the military.
