United States Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in case. Slot brooch stitched ribbon pin attachment. Come with enamel lapel device and ribbon bar. WW2 produced “Coffin” type case. 1940s-1950s era. Worn condition.
Additional Notes: The Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) was established by an Act of Congress in July of 1926 and is awarded to any officer or enlisted member of the U.S. military who distinguishes themselves by acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. The medal is not awarded for routine operational activities but rather for actions that are exceptional and set the individual apart from their peers. The DFC is a bronze cross Pattee featuring a four-bladed propeller on its obverse. The design includes rays extending from the angles of the cross, forming a square in the center. The reverse side is blank, allowing for the engraving of the recipient’s name and rank. The medal is suspended from a rectangular bar, and the accompanying ribbon is predominantly blue with red and white stripes. To be eligible for the Distinguished Flying Cross, the act of heroism must involve voluntary action in the face of danger, significantly exceeding the actions of others engaged in similar flight operations. For extraordinary achievement, the accomplishment must be so exceptional that it clearly distinguishes the individual from their comrades.
The oak leaf cluster on the Distinguished Flying Cross medal represents additional awards. It is a ribbon device that denotes a subsequent awarding of a medal or ribbon. The bronze oak leaf cluster represents one additional award, while the silver oak leaf cluster represents five bronze oak leaf clusters.
For American medal cases, the U.S. “coffin” style cases were ww2 produced. However, the “coffin” style cases/boxes were used right up to and through the Vietnam conflict as supplies of the medal boxes were used up (so you can find WW2, Korea, and Vietnam era medals in this style of case).
