Additional Notes: The Pre-WW2 Silver Star Medal manufactured by Bailey, Banks & Biddle (BB&B) is a highly collectible piece of U.S. military history. It had a split brooch pin system design, early BB&B medals often featured a split brooch, a hallmark of pre-WW2 and early WW2 military medals. Typically, these medals were often individually numbered on the edge, which sometimes allows collectors to trace them to specific recipients or units (however, only a very small number were actually traceable. Also, BB&B was known for producing high-quality military insignia and medals, making their pieces especially desirable among collectors. The Silver Star Medal was officially established in 1932 as a U.S. Army award for gallantry in action. Before WW2, it was exclusively awarded by the Army, and early medals were often issued for actions in the Philippine Islands and other pre-war engagements. BB&B medals from this era are hard-to-find and often linked to early WW2 units like the 3rd Infantry Division, which received shipments of these medals in 1943.
