United States 101st Army Airborne shoulder sleeve insignia (patch). The patch is fully embroidered with a snowy back. Most likely 1940s-1950s era. The patch does not react to UV light (does not glow under blacklight). Worn condition.
Additional Notes: The shoulder sleeve insignia of the 101st Airborne Division features a striking design of a black shield with the head of a bald eagle, known as “Old Abe”. Above the insignia is typically a black tab with yellow lettering with the word “AIRBORNE”. The eagle symbolizes the division’s Civil War heritage, specifically Old Abe, the famous war eagle carried into battle by the 8th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. The insignia was originally approved for the 101st Division in 1923, later redesignated for the 101st Airborne Division in 1942.
