SOLD US WW2 Army Officer 15th AAF Service Tunic – Named . UA1327

United States WW2 15th Army Air Force (AAF) Officer Service Tunic. Uniform has officer collar insignia, a pair of officers “U.S.” insignia and a pair of AAF (Army Air Force) officer insignia. Also, has Lieutenant (Lt.) Rank bullion insignia on shoulder strap area. One sleeve has a nice bullion 15th AAF shoulder sleeve insignia (patch). Above one front pocket is a nice bullion navigator wing and a 3-place ribbon bar and single ribbon bar. Above the other front pocket is a presidential unit citation (PUC) ribbon bar. Interior has private purchase tailor label. Also, on interior inside pocket is a tag that is marked and appears to be named: 9/e Melvin C. Sicks. Overall, worn condition with small hole and stain damage pictured.

Additional Notes: The United States (U.S.) Army basic service uniforms consisted of a winter service uniform of olive drab (OD) wool worn in temperate weather, and a summer service uniform of khaki (a shade of tan) cotton fabric worn in tropical weather. In addition to the basic service uniforms, there were also a variety of fatigue and combat uniforms utilized as well. During ww2 era, summer and winter service uniforms were worn during their respective seasons while on duty within the United States. During wartime deployment, the European Theater of Operations was considered a year-round temperate zone and the Pacific Theater of Operations a year-round tropical uniform zone. In the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, U.S. soldiers wore both seasonal uniforms.

The 15th Army Air Force was established in November of 1943, as part of the United States Army Air Forces in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. It played a crucial role in strategic bombing operations against Axis powers. The 15th Air Force was instrumental in mounting major raids in southern and eastern Europe, significantly impacting the Luftwaffe’s defenses. Its first commander was General Jimmy Doolittle, and it operated from bases in southern Italy.
