United States WW2 15th Army Air Force (AAF) Officer “Ike” Field Jacket. Uniform has officer collar insignia, a pair of officers “U.S.” insignia and a pair of AAF (Army Air Force) officer insignia. Also, has Lieutenant (Lt.) Rank bullion insignia on shoulder strap area. One sleeve has a nice bullion 15th AAF shoulder sleeve insignia (patch) and two overseas stripes on lower portion of the sleeve. Each stripe represents 6 months service in a combat zone. The 2 stripes would represent 1 year of service in a combat zone. Above one front pocket is a full-size pilot wing and 3 ribbon bars. Above the other front pocket is a presidential unit citation (PUC) ribbon bar. Interior has private purchase tailor label and information on interior tag inside pocket that contains the size of 36R written on tag. Overall, worn condition officer “Ike” jacket that has seen some use.
Additional Notes: The Eisenhower jacket also known as “Ike” jacket, officially listed as the Jacket, Field, Wool, Olive Drab, is a type of waist length jacket developed for the US. Army during the later stages of WW2 and named after Dwight Eisenhower. Intended to be worn on its own or as an insulating layer beneath the M-1943 Field Jacket and over the standard wool flannel shirt and wool sweater, it featured a pleated back, adjustable waist band, fly front buttons, bellows chest pockets, slash side pockets, and shoulder straps.
The 15th Army Air Force was established in November of 1943, as part of the United States Army Air Forces in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. It played a crucial role in strategic bombing operations against Axis powers. The 15th Air Force was instrumental in mounting major raids in southern and eastern Europe, significantly impacting the Luftwaffe’s defenses. Its first commander was General Jimmy Doolittle, and it operated from bases in southern Italy.
