United States WW2 5th Army Air Force (AAF) Service Tunic and Shirt. The service tunic has enlisted collar insignia, one “U.S.” insignia and one AAF (Army Air Force) enlisted insignia. One sleeve on the service tunic has a nice bullion 5th AAF shoulder sleeve insignia (patch) and three overseas stripes on lower portion of the sleeve. Each stripe represents 6 months service in a combat zone. The 3 stripes would represent 1 1/2 years of service in a combat zone. Service tunic also has Technical Sergeant (T.Sgt.) rank insignia on each sleeve. Above one front pocket is a nice bullion Aeriel gunner wing and 3 place ribbon bar. Also, has two qualification badges pinned on the front pocket. Above the other front pocket is a presidential unit citation (PUC) ribbon bar. Also, has several numbers, name, and other marks on interior of uniform. Interior has QM Depot contract tag on interior inside pocket that is marked size marked 40R and contract dated 1941. The Khaki (Tan) shirt is very heavily worn and damaged (tears near elbow areas). The shirt has a 5th AAF and Army Air Forces insignia on each sleeve. Also, has technical sergeant (T.Sgt) sleeve rank insignia. Shirt has cloth Aerial Gunner wings above one pocket and Ruptured Duck honorable discharge insignia above the other front pocket. Overall, worn condition service tunic and very heavily worn and damaged shirt with rips and tears on shirt near elbow area.
Additional Notes: The United States (U.S.) Army basic service uniforms consisted of a winter service uniform of olive drab (OD) wool worn in temperate weather, and a summer service uniform of khaki (a shade of tan) cotton fabric worn in tropical weather. In addition to the basic service uniforms, there were also a variety of fatigue and combat uniforms utilized as well. During ww2 era, summer and winter service uniforms were worn during their respective seasons while on duty within the United States. During wartime deployment, the European Theater of Operations was considered a year-round temperate zone and the Pacific Theater of Operations a year-round tropical uniform zone. In the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, U.S. soldiers wore both seasonal uniforms.
The US 5th AAF (Army Air Force) was a unit of the US Army Air Forces that operated in the Pacific Theater of WW2. It was established in Australia in September of 1942, under the command of Major General George Kenney.
