Additional Notes: The American Civil War Musicians Sword, also known as the Model 1840, was a significant weapon for musicians and drummers during the conflict. These swords were not just decorative items but also served as a means of defense for bandsmen who accompanied the troops on the battlefield. The M-1840 Musicians’ Sword was used by the Northern (Union) forces and was their only available weapon during the war. The sword was a testament to the vital role musicians played in raising the morale of soldiers and was often seen alongside the regular troops. The M-1840 Musicians’ Sword was similar to the 1840 NCO sword except typically slightly shorter in blade length and for its lack of oval guard on the hilt. The sword was made by the Ames Manufacturing Company and was used by the Northern (Union) forces during the American Civil War.
