WW2 German Iron Cross 1st class. Marker marked “6.” high on pin area near hinge for the maker of Fritz Zimmermann. Multi-piece construction with iron core (magnet sticks to core). Worn condition.
Additional Notes: The WW2 German Iron Cross 1st Class was a prestigious military medal awarded during WW2 by Germany. It was a breast badge, constructed of three pieces, with a solid metal plate on the reverse side. The fastening mechanism could be a hinged pin and catch or a screw-back system. The Iron Cross 1st Class was awarded for acts of bravery and leadership. For example, Heer and Waffen SS soldiers had to perform three to four further acts of courage beyond what earned them the 2nd Class Iron Cross. The Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine had specific criteria, such as U-boat commanders sinking 50,000 tons or Luftwaffe pilots achieving six or seven confirmed kills.
