United States Fore & Aft Hat. Appears to have masonic Knights Templar insignia on side of cap. Marker marked on interior of cap: Chicago Uniform Cap Co, 208 W. Monroe St, Chicago, ILL, and named to: William J. Stratton. Most likely late 1800s or early 1900s era. Overall, heavily worn condition.
Additional Notes: The Fore & Aft Hat, often referred to as a cocked hat, was a formal headpiece worn by U.S. military officers, particularly in the Navy, during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These type hats were also utilized many times by American Masonic Organizations. These hats were part of full dress or special full dress uniforms, typically reserved for ceremonial occasions like inspections, parades, or official visits.
