WW2 German Cross in Gold (DKiG) 1941 Cloth version for Luftwaffe. The German cross is on a blue-grey cloth base indicating a Luftwaffe issue award. Portions of the backing material still in place as well. Overall, good condition.

Additional Notes: The German Cross in Gold (DKiG), established in September of 1941, was awarded for exceptional bravery or outstanding service in commanding units on the battlefield. The award was not an intermediate step to the Knight’s Cross but rather an independent decoration for courage and bravery. Recipients of the Knight’s Cross could also be awarded the German Cross in Gold. The Knight’s Cross could be awarded for a single action, while multiple actions were required to earn the German Cross. In practice, it was often the case that the German Cross was awarded and conferred after receiving the Knight’s Cross. The German Cross in Gold was issued in two versions: gold and silver, with the color of the laurel wreath around the swastika. The gold version was awarded to military personnel for repeated acts of bravery in combat, or of military leadership, with 6 to 8 acts as a rule of thumb. The silver version was awarded for multiple distinguished services in the war effort and was considered a continuation of the War Merit Cross with swords.
