Additional Notes: The WW2 German War Merit Cross 1st Class (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse) was a decoration awarded by Germany during WW2 for meritorious service, particularly in support of the war effort, and was distinguished by its design and criteria for awarding.
The War Merit Cross was established in October of 1939, as a recognition for military personnel and civilians who contributed significantly to the war effort. It was intended to honor those whose service did not meet the criteria for the Iron Cross, which was primarily awarded for acts of bravery in combat.
The War Merit Cross was issued in four classes:
War Merit Cross 2nd Class: Awarded for service in support of the war effort.
War Merit Cross 1st Class: A higher distinction awarded for exceptional service, which could include military personnel and civilians.
Knights Cross of the War Merit Cross: The highest grade, awarded for extraordinary service.
Knights Cross of the War Merit Cross in Gold: A rare award that was never officially recognized due to the war’s end.
