Additional Notes: The Luftschutz Medal 2nd Class is a significant award for individuals who participated in the protection and defense of the German population during air raids. It was established in January of 1936, and officially instituted in September of 1938. The medal was awarded for meritorious and honorable service and was conferred upon members of the National Air Raid Protection League (Reichsluftschutzbund), the Security and Assistance Service, the Factory Protection Police, and the Order Police. It was also awarded to factory guards, fire fighters, police, and others who contributed to the air defense of Germany during WW2. The medal features a central swaz and the inscription “Für Dienste im Luftschutz” (For Services in Air Raid Protection) on a pebbled field, surrounded by an oak leaf wreath. It was worn on the left breast pocket of the recipient’s uniform. The 2nd Class was awarded to individuals who had served in the Luftschutz for at least six months or who had actively participated in air defense measures for a similar period of time.
