Additional Notes: Dead reckoning is a foundational method of navigation used by the United States Navy, especially in aviation before the widespread adoption of GPS. It involves calculating an aircraft’s current position based on a previously known position, factoring in speed, direction, and time elapsed. The Dead Reckoning Computer Type AN 5835-1 was a mechanical device used during WW2 to assist in calculations. It was commonly found in multi-crew aircraft like the B-17, B-24, and B-25 and used by navigators to plot courses and maintain accurate positioning during long missions.
