Additional Notes: During WW2, nickel was a critical metal used in military applications, leading to its rationing. To conserve nickel for the war effort, the US Mint changed the composition of the five-cent piece, resulting in the creation of the Silver War Nickel. This change was implemented starting October 8, 1942, and continued until the end of 1945. War Nickels are made of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. This alloy was chosen to ensure the coins could still be used in coin-operated machines, which required specific magnetic properties. The unique composition, which can be verified by weighing the coin; each War Nickel contains approximately 0.05626 troy ounces of silver. 35% Silver (1.125 Oz of Silver for Every $1 Face Value)
