Japanese Type 13 1880 Bayonet. No scabbard. The chrysanthemum “mum” on crossguard is worn away quite a bit. No serial number on the pommel area. Early Type 13 with composition-made grips instead of wood and believed to be made in Germany. This variation is typically considered “ultra-rare” please see the excellent book on Bayonets of Japan by Raymond Labar for some additional details. Bright fullered straight full-length blade approximately 22-inch blade and about 27 1/2 inches in overall length. Worn condition, no scabbard.
Additional Notes: The Type 13 bayonet was introduced in 1880 and was the first bayonet series produced in Japan. It was patterned after the 1856 British Enfield using the same blade length; however, it included the use of a straight blade instead of the yataghan style blade. Also, a hooked crossed replaced the straight crossguard. The Type 13 bayonet was quickly replaced with the shorter Type 18 only 5 years after being introduced. Original full-length Type 13 bayonets are rare, and the full-length scabbards are even harder to find. Most the Type 13 bayonets were cut down to be used as trainers or for police guards.
