Additional Notes: The US Legion of Merit degrees of Chief Commander, Commander, Officer, and Legionnaire are awarded to members of armed forces of foreign nations and is based on the relative rank or position of the recipient.

The US Army Commander Legion of Merit was an award typically bestowed to those that would be equivalent of a US military chief of staff or higher position, but not to a head of state.

When the Legion of Merit is awarded to members of the uniformed services of the U.S., it is awarded without reference to degree. The criteria are “for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements” and is typically reserved for senior officers at O-6 level and above, typically in connection with senior leadership/command positions or other senior positions of significant responsibility.

The LoM badge has five points and rests on a web of interlocking arrows and a wreath. In the center are thirteen white stars against a field of blue.

For American medal cases, the U.S. “coffin” style cases were ww2 produced. However, the “coffin” style cases/boxes were used right up to and through the Vietnam conflict as supplies of the medal boxes were used up (so you can find WW2, Korea, and Vietnam era medals in this style of case). Next, clear plastic cases/boxes were used in the 1950’s and 60’s (typically you see Vietnam era medals in these cases). The clear plastic cases were followed up by the blue vinyl-type grained textured cases/boxes with the metal rims which were utilized in the 1970’s follow up by blue vinyl-type smooth covered cases with metal rims. After that, there were blue vinyl-type smooth covered cases without metal rims. Finally small hard shell plastic blue cases were introduced.
