1951 British Five Shillings coin. Festival of Britain. King George VI. Worn condition.
Additional Notes: The Festival of Britain 1951 Crown, also known as the 5 shillings coin, is a commemorative coin issued to celebrate Britain’s post-war recovery. It features an iconic design of Saint George slaying the dragon, with the obverse showcasing the portrait of King George VI. The coin is one of only two crowns minted during George VI’s reign, the other being the 1937 Coronation Crown. The coin is not intended for circulation and is instead released as a collectible item.
The Festival of Britain King George VI 5 Shillings Coin does not contain any silver. Instead, it is made from a cupronickel alloy, which is a hard-wearing alloy used to produce many coins in current UK currency. The Royal Mint stopped using silver for regular coinage in 1947, and the 1951 Festival of Britain Crown was minted in this cupronickel alloy.
