United States Civil War Token. 1863 The Flag of our Union. 1863 dated on one side with the words: The Flag of our Union above. The other side is the wording: If anybody attempts to tear it down shoot him on the spot DIX. Very worn condition with hit to coin.

Additional Notes: Civil War Tokens appeared in the early 1860s because there were severe shortages of U.S. government-issued coins.  Regular cents of that era were strongly hoarded, so private individuals started making small copper coins to meet the demands of local commerce. The government caught up eventually, and Civil War Tokens disappeared after supply caught up. These interesting Civil war token have a nice collector following today and are a nice character item from the U.S. Civil War.
