Additional Notes: The US Army Air Corps 2nd Bombardment Group’s distinctive insignia, “Mors Et Destructio,” was originally used during World War I. The motto was changed to “Libertatum Defendimus” (We Defend Liberty) in April 1940. The insignia features a shield divided into five stripes, with black and primitive green representing the colors used by the Army Air Service during World War I. The three green stripes symbolize the three major offensives the wing participated in: St. Mihiel, Lorraine, and Meuse-Argonne. The white fleur-de-lis at the top represents France, the theater of operations for the wing’s World War I achievements. The lower portion of the shield is Air Force golden yellow, charged with four aerial bombs in ultramarine blue, representing the original four combatant squadrons (11th, 20th, 96th, and 166th Aero Squadrons).
