United States WW2 9th AAF (Army Air Forces) Field Jacket. One sleeve has a nice bullion Army Air Forces (AAF) in Europe HQ command shoulder sleeve insignia (patch) on upper portion of sleeve and two overseas stripes on lower portion of the sleeve. Each stripe represents 6 months service in a combat zone. The 2 stripes would represent 1 year of service in a combat zone. Below that is one service stripe (each stripe represented three years of honorable service). The jacket also has a nice bullion 9th army air forces shoulder sleeve insignia on the other sleeve. There are also cloth Sergeant (Sgt.) rank insignia on each sleeve. Also, has enlisted brass collar insignia (one “U.S.” and one Air Corps insignia) on collar area with blue Distinctive Unit Insignia below. Above one pocket is a good conduct ribbon bar and above the other pocket is a ruptured duck honorable discharge cloth insignia. Also, has US Army Expert Qualification badge on one pocket with 3 bars. Faded tag inside interior pocket and size tag in neck area marked: 32R. Worn condition.
Additional Notes: The Eisenhower jacket also known as “Ike” jacket, officially listed as the Jacket, Field, Wool, Olive Drab, is a type of waist length jacket developed for the US. Army during the later stages of WW2 and named after Dwight Eisenhower. Intended to be worn on its own or as an insulating layer beneath the M-1943 Field Jacket and over the standard wool flannel shirt and wool sweater, it featured a pleated back, adjustable waist band, fly front buttons, bellows chest pockets, slash side pockets, and shoulder straps.
The Ninth Air Force (9th AAF) played a crucial role in WW2, particularly in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. Initially activated in 1942, it operated in Egypt and Libya, later supporting the Normandy invasion and the Allied advance across France and Germany. The 9th AAF was a tactical air force, providing air support for ground troops and conducting bombing missions. It was inactivated in Germany in December 1945 but later reactivated in the U.S.
