Additional Notes: The Defense Distinguished Service Medal (DDSM) is the highest non-combat military award presented by the U.S. Department of Defense. Established on July 9, 1970 by Executive Order 11545 under President Richard Nixon, it recognizes exceptionally meritorious service in a position of great responsibility that significantly contributes to the national security or defense of the United States.
