Additional Notes: The Army of Occupation Medal was established in 1946 to recognize U.S. military personnel who performed occupation service in designated territories after World War II. When awarded with the Germany Bar, it signifies service in the American-occupied zones of Germany, Austria, or West Berlin between May 9, 1945, and May 5, 1955. The Berlin Airlift Device—a small gold miniature of a Douglas C-54 cargo plane—was authorized for wear on the medal’s ribbon to honor those who participated in the Berlin Airlift (June 26, 1948 – September 30, 1949), a massive humanitarian and logistical effort to supply West Berlin during the Soviet blockade.
