US Defense Meritorious Service Medal w/Mini . YMU4540

U.S. Defense Meritorious Service Medal with Miniature in case. Most likely 1970s-1990s issue.

Additional Notes: The Defense Meritorious Service Medal is an award bestowed upon members of the U.S. military by the United States Department of Defense. In the order of precedence of the U.S. Armed Forces, it is worn between the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal. The medal is awarded in the name of the Secretary of Defense to members of the Armed Forces who, while serving in a joint activity, distinguish themselves by non-combat outstanding achievement or meritorious service, but not of a degree to warrant award of the Defense Superior Service Medal.

For American medal cases, the U.S. “coffin” style  boxes were ww2 produced. However, the “coffin” style boxes were used right up to and through the Vietnam conflict as supplies of the medal boxes were used up (so you can find WW2, Korea, and Vietnam era medals in this style of case). Next, clear plastic boxes were used in the 1950’s and 60s (typically you see Vietnam era medals in these cases). The clear plastic cases were followed up by the blue grained texture boxes with the metal rims which were utilized in the 1970’s.
