French WW1 Croix de Guerre Medal. Green ribbon with thin red stripes in worn condition. Reverse of medal has dates 1914-1917. Worn condition.

Additional Notes: The Croix de Guerre 1914–1917 was a French military decoration established during WW1 to honor soldiers, both French and allied, who demonstrated acts of bravery in combat. Created by law on 8 April 1915, it served as France’s equivalent to the British “Mentioned in Dispatches,” but with a visible medal and ribbon. The award could be given for individual heroism or for collective unit citations, and it came in several degrees, marked by bronze, silver, or gold stars and palms on the ribbon to indicate the level of the commendation (e.g., regiment, brigade, division, or army level). By 1917, the Croix de Guerre had become a widely recognized symbol of valor, worn proudly by soldiers who had faced the dangers of the front lines with courage and distinction.
