U.S. Civil War Token – Army and Navy 1863 . Coincw55

U.S. Civil War Token 1863. Worn and used condition. Army and Navy 1863 version. On the other side has the 1863 date and United States and picture of the capital. Civil War Tokens appeared in the early 1860s because there were severe shortages of U.S. government-issued coins. Regular cents of that era were strongly hoarded, so private individuals started making small copper coins to meet the demands of local commerce. The government caught up eventually, and Civil War Tokens disappeared after supply caught up. These interesting Civil war token have a nice collector following today and are a nice character item from the U.S. Civil War.
